Welcome to Small Foundation’s new website

‘Communication is truth; communication is happiness. To share is our duty.’

― Virginia Woolf, The Common Reader

For more than ten years, Small Foundation has been investing, partnering, learning and reflecting in order to achieve our vision, mission and goal. Along the way we have benefited from the generosity and openness of our partners, peer funders and ecosystem collaborators, who have shared invaluable knowledge and learning.

We want to shine a light on the work our partners do to build thriving rural-impacting business ecosystems in sub-Saharan Africa. And we want to share lessons and signpost others to the work that influences us as a social funder.

As a contribution to these aspirations, we are delighted to launch our new visual identity and website. We are grateful to CI Studio for their creativity and designs which bring more intensity and dynamism to how we communicate about our work. We would also like to thank Equity for Africa Group, Village Capital, One Acre Fund and Root Capital who have allowed us to use some of their inspiring imagery.

Small Foundation is committed to disseminating information, knowledge and expertise on effective, sustainable and scalable development programmes and business models to a wide variety of stakeholders who have the potential to use this information to eradicate poverty and transform the lives of poor rural people in sub-Saharan Africa.

We also want to make our work as a funder accountable, transparent and accessible.

Fundamentally, to achieve these goals, we hope that sharing more will enable Small Foundation’s relentless collaboration with others. As the African proverb says, ‘if you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.’ Collaboration is hard work and can be messy, but we believe it is essential to catalysing rural-impacting small business ecosystems in sub-Saharan Africa.

Today Small Foundation begins a new phase in our journey of researching, collaborating and disseminating for systemic impact. We hope that you will read on, share, and work with us so that we can go far together.
