Visualising our network portfolio: a global mapping
We recently undertook a mapping exercise of our portfolio of networks to visualise their reach and to explore opportunities for deeper linkages across our investment and network portfolios. The mapping illustrates the membership of ten of our network partners, with a combined 1,862 members working on issues that affect the MSME ecosystem across sub-Saharan Africa and globally.
Distribution of Small Foundation’s Network Practice partners’ network members
Figure 1: This map illustrates the distribution of membership of our networks. Lighter shades of green indicate fewer members and darker signifies higher concentrations. Countries shown in white have no network members.
Overall 80% of our network partners are based on the African continent, with a presence in 45 African countries. These networks touch on many of the complex, and often interrelated, problems faced across the rural and agricultural business ecosystem, including issues around access to finance (AFRACA, SAFIN, WAI, London Africa); the provision of technical assistance to SMEs (UAA, AMEA, ANDE West Africa Chapter); leadership in agribusiness ecosystems (AL for Agribusiness Network); and tackling systemic challenges related to the support of rural business development and investment (SOIF, African Food Fellowship).
While the mapping illustrates the wide geographic and systemic interests of Small Foundation’s network portfolio, we recognise the common approach used in creating space to bring members together. By convening members these networks are building trust and spurring connection, coordination, and ultimately collaboration towards shared solutions.
Earlier this year Small Foundation held our first partner gathering. This provided an opportunity for our partners to connect with one another and other ecosystem actors seeking to amplify their impact. Convening is critical to understanding what is happening in the systems we work within, including common challenges and required changes. This mapping highlights an opportunity to deepen exchange across network members working in aligned geographies and themes. We are excited to further develop the map as our portfolio evolves.
