The Economics of Agri-SME Lending in East Africa (Dec. 2018) analyses the challenges and economics of financing agricultural small and medium enterprises (agri-SMEs) across Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.
The report highlights the large financing gap despite agriculture’s importance to GDP, examines the operating models of banks, social lenders, and non-bank financial institutions, and identifies barriers such as high risks, collateral demands, and high operating costs. The study also explores blended finance and other support mechanisms to catalyse increased lending and better tailored products for agri-SMEs.
