Alterfin is a Belgian social impact investment cooperative established in 1994. It aims to strengthen the resilience and self-sufficiency of socially and economically disadvantaged communities in low- and middle-income countries while prioritising environmental sustainability. With over 6,000 members, Alterfin raises capital to support social enterprises, microfinance institutions, and sustainable agriculture initiatives, promoting sustainable development. Drawing on 30 years of experience, Alterfin’s portfolio exceeds 100 million euros, positively impacting 4.5 million beneficiaries and fostering the long-term economic stability of its partners.

In 2024 Small Foundation partnered with Alterfin to support a six-month pilot digital upskilling programme provided by Lightful to 50 of Alterfin’s partners. This partnership is expected to help us understand how improved communications can benefit rural-serving organisations.
