Reflections from the 2025 Small Foundation Gathering – guest post by Wale Ajiboye

I spent two transformative days at the Small Foundation Gathering, arriving in Nairobi with a deep sense of hope—hope that, in the face of today’s global challenges, we can build stronger alliances to advance the work of the Growth Firms Alliance (GFA).

As a network of foundations, GFA is committed to elevating growth firms to the forefront of the global agenda, recognising their critical role in boosting productivity and driving economic transformation in emerging markets. Our mission is to unlock both financial and non-financial resources by working collaboratively with system actors, breaking down silos, and championing more inclusive and sustainable pathways for SMEs to thrive.

Knowing Circle Generation‘s style of facilitation, I knew it wasn’t just another meeting. The two days enabled a space for deep reflection, shared learning, and meaningful connection.

Through storytelling, micro-learning sessions, dinners, presentations, and group activities, we explored complex topics and engaged in nuanced conversations. We shared insights, learned new ways of working, and reimagined how to build a stronger ecosystem for changemakers.

I also had the opportunity to connect with Small Foundation grantees, partners, staff, management, and board members. No matter who I spoke with—whether a board member or a team member—there was a shared spirit of generosity and curiosity in every conversation.

Four key takeaways

  1. Our stories connect us: Regardless of location or educational background, we all share a common thread: the desire to create a better, more equitable world. Our stories serve as powerful reminders that we are united by a shared purpose—to rebuild broken systems and drive meaningful change.
  2. The power of collective action: There is a growing community of people willing to collaborate and take action. To sustain this momentum, we need more spaces that encourage generosity, openness, and innovative thinking—amplifying the collective energy required for real transformation.
  3. Culture as a force: Witnessing Small Foundation’s culture in action was truly inspiring. As one of the co-founders of the GFA, Small Foundation has consistently embodied openness, collaboration, and a deep commitment to our mission. Seeing this culture reflected across all levels of the organisation reaffirmed the importance of shared values.
  4. Ask the right questions: The biggest lesson I’m taking away is the importance of asking the right questions. Drew from Collaborative for Frontier Finance emphasised this point during our group discussion on how to solve the funding gap in SME financing. “Living the question” has always been one of my guiding principles, and this convening reinforced its value. It’s not just about finding answers but about embracing curiosity and exploration as a path to progress. We need this more than ever.

A huge thank you to Small Foundation for the invitation and for creating such a meaningful space for connection and growth. This convening was a testament to the power of collaboration, shared learning, and collective impact—and I look forward to continuing this journey together with our partners and allies.
